FLORENCE – A regional contribution of 50,000 euros has been put towards the development of free, or so-called ‘povera’ or poor, accommodation, along the Tuscan Via Francigena.

The resources will be entrusted to the ‘Associazione Ecclesiale Nazionale di Pellegrinaggio della Via Francigena e delle Antiche Vie’, also known as Ad Limina Petri, who will use the funds to realise small maintenance and furnishing projects for structures that already host pilgrims, in order to immediately make them functional and working and thus enriching the hospitality in less equip areas.   

“The operation– explains the regional councillor of tourism, Stefano Ciuoffo – its linked to the ‘Rete degli Ostelli’ (Web of Hostels) project, created to give life to a uniform, low-cost offer to pilgrims with the Pilgrim Passport.  14 hostels are included in the ‘web’, realised using the PAR-FAS 2007-13 funds. Now the ‘web’ is expanding and includes other public properties present in the municipalities of the route and particularly ecclesiastical properties not classified as accommodating structures.  They are free of charge accommodation, requalified to supply lodging.”
