Via Francigena, the marathon walking season begins

Ready, set, go! With the marathon of Lake Bolsena, scheduled the 29th April, the season of non-competitive walks on the Via Francigena has officially begun.

Lazio, Tuscany and Piedmont: this year walking enthusiasts have half of Italy to travel on foot. After the success of the European Francigena Marathon, the mother of all Francigena marathons, the number of slow-pace events has grown with routes of various lengths suitable for adults and children.

The first will be the Lake Marathon of Bolsena in the province of Viterbo, on 29th April, starting from Montefiascone. A non-competitive walking of 50 and 21 km along the nature trails along the banks of the lake. Registration  is open until 15th April or at the registration of 500 participants.

On 27th May, we have an appointment with the sixth edition of the “European Francigena Marathon” from Acquapendente to Montefiascone for a 42,195 km “walk” with various intermediate arrivals. Closing date for registration  is 10th May 2018 or the reaching of 3 thousand participants.

The summer opens with a double debut. On 2nd June the Francigena Half Marathon will take place, 22 km from the Berceto hostel in Pontremoli. The first marathon in Piedmont will take place on 17th June: the Francigena Valdisusa Marathon, 42 km surrounded by history and nature, from Avigliana passing through the Sacra di San Michele to Susa. The event is now “sold out” with 2,000 members and, for security reasons it is no longer possible participate.

After the summer break, on 30th September, the Francigena Tuscany Marathon returns from Pietrasanta to Lucca. Registration is open to participate in this second edition. Finally, on 20th and 21st October 2018, the World Francigena Ultramarathon will take place, the first ultramarathon in Europe for just walkers: 120 km from Siena to Acquapendente as well as other shorter routes for trekking and Nordic walking on the ancient route. Registration  opens the 1st May.
