Via Francigena

Lombardy Region

The Via Francigena crosses Lombardy along a flat stretch of approximately 150 km, divided into 7 stages spanning the provinces of Pavia and Lodi. The route begins at the Piedmont border in the town of Palestro and winds through rivers such as the Sesia, Po, and Ticino, cultivated fields, and charming, lesser-known villages. Key stops include places like Robbio, Mortara, Pavia, and Orio Litta, before reaching the Emilia-Romagna border at Piacenza.

This Lombard section is rich in historical and cultural attractions, including the ancient Benedictine Grange in Orio Litta, now a pilgrim hostel, and the thermal springs of Miradolo Terme. Additionally, the route is supported by a network of dedicated accommodations and digital tools for travelers, such as official apps and guides.

Lombardy plays a strategic role in the promotion of the Via Francigena, especially in view of the Jubilee Year 2025 and its UNESCO World Heritage nomination.
