Cascina Filandone was, until the 1970s, a flourishing farm. The original name ‘filandone’ probably derived from the silkworm breeding activity practised by many families, who sold the cocoons to the nearby spinning mill of Villa Litta to obtain additional income. Only in recent years has its name become ‘Aione’, or ‘Eròn’ in dialect, in reference to the size of the adjacent farmyard, today Piazza Aldo Moro and public garden. In the 19th century, the building belonged to Cav. Pier Felice Avondo who, in 1878, built an aqueduct there to provide water for the stables. It was not until 1977 that the Cascina became the property of the municipality, which purchased it to make it a civic centre and venue for popular events during festivals. In 1981, redevelopment work began, which made it possible to recover the stables, the hayloft on the north side, the well and the ‘navèl’, or drinking trough, now converted into a planter. In 1985, thanks to the completion of the work, Orio Litta inaugurated the new municipal headquarters, placing the offices on the ground floor of the Cascina, while the council chamber and library were placed on the first floor. Today, the building also houses the Infopoint and the post office, thus preserving the old farmstead, which still bears witness to the village’s rural origins and tradition, as well as an important historical-architectural heritage.
