The cistern was built by the architects of the 2nd Parthian Legion to provide the necessary water supply for the surrounding dwellings. It was built partly by directly excavating the rocky bank and partly in masonry; it is divided into five naves, characterised by barrel vaults and is covered with a waterproof plaster.
