Sigerico Ford

In Corte Sant’Andrea, a hamlet of the municipality of Senna Lodigiana, is the Transitum Padi, also known as Guado di Sigerico, the ancient passageway on the river Po that allows pilgrims to disembark at Soprarivo di Calendasco, the first Emilian stage of the Via Francigena. The landing stage is recognisable thanks to a small brick column, decorated with a stone bas-relief depicting the pilgrim symbol of the Via Francigena, placed just before the landing. Archbishop Sigeric, in his diary, mentions Corte Sant’Andrea and the ford as the XXXIX stage of his journey back to Canterbury, describing it as a place bustling with pilgrims, animals, goods and peasants intent on crossing it on huge rafts. Even today, the ford maintains its historical function, leading to the Piacenza shore by private boats, for which, however, it is necessary to book at least one day in advance.
