The “Francigena” artistic project, born from an idea of Charles Myber, historical journalist and president of “The Renaissance Association of the Via Francigena” aims to enhance the 1800km route which unites England, France, Switzerland and Italy.
The idea of the project is to animate the different stages of a pilgrims’ journey with performances by young actors from four of the most famous European theatre academies. From the detailed description left by Archbishop Sigéric, the internationally renowned author and director, Carlo Boso, will write a specific piece centered on the adventures and journeys experienced by Sigeric and his colourful travelling companions along the Via Francigena.
The international dimension of the project will be highlighted thanks to the involvement of students from four of the most important theatre training centres in Europe: the National Theatre, with students of Didi Hopkins (England); the International Academy of Performing Arts, Versailles (France); the Dimitri de Verscio Theatre Academy (Switzerland); and the Civic Academy of Dramatic Art, Nico Pepe of Udine (Italy).
The student-actors at the end of their studies, in view of their professionalisation, will be involved in the creation of four interdisciplinary troupes of dance, fencing, singing, mime and acrobatics that will animate the route. The production and creation of the four performances will be provided by the artistic collaborators of the International Academy of the Performing Arts of Versailles. Once established by Carlo Boso (May 2019), the show, created by the French team, will also be produced along the sections of the other three countries (June-July 2020).
This long journey will bring the four companies to meet in Rome, where, in the summer of 2020, they will perform simultaneously in four strategic places in the Italian capital.
