2018 is a year full of novelties for the Via Francigena guides in Italy. The Terre di Mezzo publishing company, in collaboration with the European Association of Via Francigena Ways (EAVF), has published the first edition in French, dedicated to the stretch from the Great St Bernard Pass to Rome.
With 2200 copies printed, the guide can be purchased online on “Percorsi di Terre” website and will be available in bookshops of large Italian cities and along the route. It’s an important result from an editorial point of view that observes the international market and confirms the interest of walkers across the Alps to slow paths in Italy.
“The guide in French is the most significant innovation for our publishing house in autumn 2018 – confirms Miriam Giovanzana, Director of Terre di Mezzo – it is great for us because it is the first edition of a guide dedicated to an Italian walk in French “.
In addition to the French translation, the second English edition of the Via Francigena guide will also be available from September. After the success of the first volume published in March 2017, the Milanese publishing house has produced an updated version aimed at the English public with information on the thousand kilometres from the Great St. Bernard Pass to Rome.
“Both guides in French and English are aligned with the third Italian edition published in September. All this is the result of great editorial coordination – adds Giovanzana – Despite the lighter alternative offered by the App, the guide still remains the preferred choice for those who undertake the journey“.
A slow pace journey that begins with the Pilgrim Passport. The guides of Terre di Mezzo can be purchased online in packages with the official Pilgrim Passport of the European Association of Via Francigena Ways. Among the various points of distribution of the EAVF Pilgrim Passport (https://www.viefrancigene.org/it/credenziali/), the editorial office of Terre di Mezzo in via Calatafimi 10 in Milan is also a distribution point for the documents.

Along the Italian section, in just over two years, more than 20,000 guides were printed (in three languages) that consolidated the official EAVF path. The next objective of the European Association of the Via Francigena Ways is the creation of new guides for the Canterbury – Great St Bernard Pass section and from Rome to Puglia to complete a cultural route of almost 3,000km.
